The People's Car: A New Definition of Low Cost

After a blockbuster hit for its US$5,000 truck, Indian industrialist Ratan Tata had launched another hit on January 10 via a car that cost 100,000 rupees only, or about US$2,500 at the current exchange rate.

The little egg-shaped Tata Nano is “designed with a family in mind, has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room” as per press release. It is said that it can comfortably seat four persons, despite of the fact that it has a length of 3.1 meters, width of 1.5 meters and height of 1.6 meters only.

The so-called People’s Car has a 30-horsepower rear-engine, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc, 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft. Furthermore, the car is designed for fuel efficiency.

The firm plans to sell the vehicles in emerging markets.
