Cities across the globe turn off lights to pave way for Earth Hour

Most parts of the globe went dark for an hour, starting at eight o' clock in the evening up to 9:00pm, on Saturday, March 29 (Sunday, Mar. 30 in Manila) for Earth Hour - a worldwide event which aims to make public awareness about the danger of climate change.

This annual event is organized by the environmental group World Wildlife Fund (WWF) which is at the forefront of urging governments, businesses and households to turn back to candle power for at least 60 minutes starting at 8 p.m. wherever they were. As per estimates by Earth Hour officials, about 100 million people have participated in the said event.

The idea for conducting such an event is to somehow lessen the greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere by switching off nonessential lights and electronic goods for quite awhile, in this case one hour. The lower electricity demand for the time being would mean that power plants would generate lesser electricity, and thus emit lesser greenhouse gases which is a major cause of climate change. And the one hour lights off could very well serve as a reprieve, providing a space for Mother Earth to catch up its breath.

In Manila, lights went off in almost all establishments, including malls, cultural centers, business process outsourcing (BPO) facilities, and hotels and retaurants, within Metro Manila. Some provincial capitals, towns and municipalities joined as well.

On the other hand, lights on more than 200 downtown buildings were dimmed Saturday night in Chicago, including the stripe of white light around the top of the John Hancock Center. Lights went out also at the famed Wat Arun Buddhist temple in Bangkok; several castles in Sweden and Denmark; the parliament building in Budapest; a string of landmarks in Warsaw; and government offices and cathedrals in England.

In some related developments, activists gathered outside one of Dublin's most impressive floodlit buildings, the Custom House, and cheered as the lights went out. However, international banks and investment brokerages of Dublin's financial district blazed away with light, illuminating floor after empty floor of desks and idling computers.
