Free CNG bus rides in the Philippines

Commuters in the Philippines will have a chance to board a free ride provided by operators of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses. The free bus rides will be offered for 10 days starting Monday, March 24 up to April 2.

Bus operator H.M. Transport will be deploying one unit which will ply initially the Calamba-Lawton route, while KL CNG Transport Corp. will be fielding at least 10 units on the Batangas-Cubao route.

These CNG-ran buses will be the first non-electric utilization for indigenous natural gas in the Philippines, which is in line with the country's natural gas program for public transportation. The free bus run would effectively serve as the phase one of the program. Under the program, at least 2,000 CNG-ran buses should be operational by 2010.

Fares are expected to be trimmed down at least 50% of the prevailing prices once commercial operations set in, since CNG will be supplied at a subsidized price of Php14 per liter.

The lone CNG retail supplier would be Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. The CNG will be sourced from the Malampaya offshore gas field in Palawan, then will be piped to Shell's mother station in Tabangao, Batangas.
