The 10 Most Outrageous Cars of 2008

An article by Brian Walker as provided by TheStreet.com and published in numerous websites features what he classifies as the most outrages cars for this year. “With all the changes in the automotive world, there's never a shortage of crazy ideas floating around”, he wrote.

With that in mind, here are 10 of the most outrageous, extravagant, or just plain cool automobiles to look for in the coming year, from green car to super car and beyond:

Lamborghini Reventón

This car model is a very limited edition. Only 20 of these fighter jet-inspired super cars will be made, and they've already sold at over US$1-million a piece. The car can accelerate up to 100 kph (62 mph) in the same time as the Murciélago LP640 (3.3 seconds). It is capable of reaching a maximum speed of over 340 kph (211.3 mph). By the way, The Reventón (means "explosion" or "burst" in Spanish) is named after a fighting bull in keeping with Lamborghini tradition. The bull, owned by the Don Rodríguez family, was best known for killing famed bullfighter Félix Guzmán in 1943.

Smart Fortwo

This car is small enough to fit in half a parking space; however, when it comes to performance, this car can reach up to 90 miles an hour, all while getting 33 miles to the gallon, according to the company specifications. With a base price of only US$11,000, it's the perfect replacement for that road-hogging sports utility vehicles (SUVs).

Bugatti Veyron

Fuel economy is not something to think about when purchasing this car. This gas-guzzling beast can consume a tank of gas for just 12 minutes, running at top speed. Its 1,001 horsepower will pin you to the seat at over 250 miles per hour. For just over US$1.5-million, this model is one of the most expensive, albeit fastest, cars on the planet.

Tesla Roadster

This Ferrari-like body has a price tag of about US$98,950. It is the world's first fully electric super car. It has no backup gas tank whatsoever, just a rechargeable electric engine that the company claims will get you up to 220 miles on a single charge. It has an efficiency of about six times that of rival cars, and contributes ten-fold fewer carbon dioxide emissions.

International CXT

This car is released by the International Truck and Engine Corporation. It is built on the same platform as a dump truck. The CXT model (Commercial Extreme Truck) is the largest production pickup truck on the market, its curb weight of 14,500 lbs. is around twice the weight of a Hummer H1. It is equipped with the DT 466 diesel engine and is capable of towing up to 20 tons while its air-ride cab and individual bucket seats offer a smooth ride for both the driver and passengers. Mechanical features include air brakes, an Allison 2500HD automatic transmission, and 4-wheel drive.

Hummer HX

Designed to compete for the Jeep Wrangler, this small, off-road capable, convertible model takes some styling cues from old Hummer versions and adds a few tweaks. The car model is complete with a 3.6-liter SIDI E85 FlexFuel engine which sends power to all four wheels via a six-speed auto box.

Scion Hako

Resembling an orange box with wraparound windows, this car will definitely turn heads and create a love it or hate it opinion similar to other super cars. Internal fixtures include plenty of interior technology, such as Bluetooth phone capability and video cameras instead of side view mirrors, with the images shown on screens inside the doors.

Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

Described as less eco-friendly and more ego-friendly, this newest offering from the classically opulent auto maker is designed more to be driven and not driven in. It is sleek, fast and fun. The extravagance continues to the interior, where a "starlight" headliner entertains passengers with flickering lights resembling the night sky.

Jeep Renegade

This boldly styled model is an open-air off-road 4x4, but with a 200-kW electric motor. The car uses one of these motors (which get up to 40 miles on a charge) on each axle for true four-wheel drive. Meanwhile, a Bluetec backup diesel engine will get you where you need on longer drives. The car finishes off the unique design by covering the car's exterior with rubber accents, hidden storage compartments, and shortened windshield and doors.

Maybach 62 S

This ultra-lavish designed model has a turbocharged engine that is capable of accelerating at Ferrari-like speeds. It's better thought of as a high-powered limo, and the list of amenities for the passenger section in back is endless. A mini-fridge, wine cooler, leather armchairs for seats, automatic window curtains, auto-tinting glass roof, and personal video screens for every passenger are only the more normal options available. It sells at around US$500,000.
