Philippine mobile penetration rate as of 3rd quarter of 2007

As of Sept. 2007, the mobile penetration rate in the country already reached 57%. Merely 3% short of this year's forecast of 60% and 10% below 2010's target of 70%.

As expected, Smart Communications is cornering the market with 28.3-million subscribers as of the said period, upped by about 4.1-million subscribers from end-2006 24.2-million figures.

Globe Telecoms is a distant second with 19.2-million subscribers. Last year, its total subscribers had reached 15.66-million.

On the other hand, Nokia remains to lead the market in the mobile phone unit sales category. It has sold more than 1-billion handsets, with sales growing at 25% annually.

By the way, the Philippines has the highest rate of SMS usage in the world. However, internet penetration rate in the country is just roughly 1% or about 1.2-million regular internet users.
