Two Filipinos of Chinese descents are included on Forbes' list of billionaires for 2008, which is spearheaded by stock investor Warren Buffet (US$62-billion networth), Mexican telecommunication tycoon Carlos Slim Helú (US$60-billion networth), and Microsoft founder Bill Gates (US$58-billion networth).
The wealthiest Filipino, which ranked at number 785 on the Forbes' list, is tobacco and airline magnate Lucio Tan with an estimated networth of US$1.5-billion or about Php63-billion. He owns and controls some 300 companies, which include the largest tobacco company in the Philippines, Fortune Tobacco; 2nd largest brewer in the Philippines, Asia Brewery; one of the world's largest rum makers, Tanduay Holdings; the country's flag carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL); one of the most financially stable academic institutions in the Philippines in terms of assets, University of the East (UE); the country's 5th largest bank, Philippine National Bank (PNB); the country's 8th largest bank, Allied Banking Corp.; leading aviation and logistic services provider MacroAsia Corp.; and the newly-established global property arm of his conglomerate, Eton Properties.
On the other hand, mall magnate Henry Sy, Sr., the founder and chairman of the country's largest retailing firm SM Prime Holdings, is ranked at number 843 out of the 1,125 Asians who were included in the Forbes' list. His networth is estimated at US$1.4-billion, or about Php58.8-billion. His conglomerate now operates 30 SM malls nationwide, including the sprawling Mall of Asia and SM Megamall, two of the world's largest mall. He also owns and controls the country's 2nd largest bank, Banco de Oro Unibank, which merged with Equitable PCI bank and China Banking Corp. Moreover, his business branched out to other industries like real estate, hotels and resort developments.
