Japanese power generators reached a new milestone

Japan's 10 major power firms collectively generated an all-time high of 3,226 GWh of electricity on Jan. 22, from 3,221 GWh recorded just four days ago, as a cold spell across the country drove up energy consumption, the Federation of Electric Power Companies revealed.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), the country's largest power firm, said it deployed a record 55.022 GW energy demand. Tokyo and its nearby areas experienced 3.6°C temperatures the past days. On the other hand, Nagoya-based Chubu Electric Power Co., which caters to central Japan, reported its own record-high generation at 488 Gwh, spurred by 4.4°C daytime temperatures.

Power firms in Japan are relying on nuclear facilities to meet the country's baseload demand, which is supplemented with gas-fired generation, while oil-fueled thermal power plants are often ran to meet peak requirements.
